Just curious..

While playing Galciv2 I was just wondering about something...

One thing I do often is when a war is going well for me against an ai opponent and he offers a peace treaty is I make him give me all (or as much as he'll give me) of his techs too for the treaty. When I am a bit behind in techs this can be a ton of "free" techs that I get in exchange for a peace treaty.

But then a few turns later I just declare war on him again and finish him off.

My question is are you penalized for this by the other ai players? Will they be more inclined to declare war on you or something if you use this tactic? Just wondering if there's any penalty at all for this piece of treachery.

I know there is a permanent diplomacy penalty for attacking civs with which you have made economic or research treaties. I would assume the same goes for peace treaties.

I do this sometimes , It is good to have races at your mercy and toy with them.

When I do use this strategy, It usually means I am also building up to take on some of the more powerful AI's. So I leave a few powerful ships close, then I let them rebuild a bit, not enough to make them a threat then crush them again, demand as much as possible for peace and repeat.

Why destroy a cash cow. Just milk it every now and then.

You can get the whole galaxy working as your slaves.

Don't do this too often or leave them too many worlds cause if they surrender to the wrong AI, it could work against you.

All depends how you feel and how quick you want to win.

That's a good question. I just stepped up to GC2, but I'm finishing up a game of GC1 where I couldn't help but do the war-peace-war-peace cycle just to extort some extra cash out of the Korx while taking them down. Eventually the negotiation dialogue changed and they started berating my "pitiful strategy" and making jibes about it. It was a real treat to find that the devs considered that tactic and put in a little guilt trip for me. It was actually pretty effective in making me reconsider my tactics, but it would be good to see some kind of real penalty to discourage such AI abuse.

The AI is a lot less likely to surrender to you in the future if you have a history of breaking peace treaties. You'll see something in the dialogue, along the lines of, "I know we're screwed, but we can't trust you so we'll fight to the bitter end."
