really starting to hate this game

I've had the gold edition for a month and have yet to enjoy a game. I played the hell out of Space Empires III, but hated SE IV. Did I make a bad choice here? The most important customization I made was to change to the default mouse cursor. My system has plenty of speed and graphics capability, but I see no need for high-end graphics in a strat game. I disabled everything graphical I could find, but the interface still makes me angry. Every window works differently and there's always something moving while I'm trying to concentrate. Am I destined to play SEIII (aka "the spreadsheet") forever? Is there any modern turn-based strategy game with complex gameplay but simple graphics?

I really want to like this game. Am I missing something here?

How do you know your system has "plenty" of speed and graphics capability? I play on a pretty low-end laptop, and the game works quite well. Maybe you should post a debug file. If you don't know what that is, then do a search on this forum and you'll easily find out how to post one here. Then people will be able to give you informed advice.

Good luck, and don't give up on this game yet. It's the best game of its type, IMHO.

Anyhow, GalCiv2 does have a bit of a steep learning curve. How about telling us whats your problems are, and we'll try to help.

Well, you can play GC2 with icons for planets, ships and everything: just play at the tactical level (zoom out to the maximum or change the tactical level setting).

well, everybody has a different taste i guess.
I for my part think it's absolutely great that the game has nice graphics as well.
sometime I just look at the rotating planets withthe icepols and stuff and I really like it. oh yeah and I also like my ships which i design for maximum ugliness

Yeah, THE GAME. It is more than just its interface. For me, a strategy game becomes interesting when I understand the basic rules and I can devise several different plausible strategies. Then I'm thinking about the game, and not just about its graphics and interface.

If you want minimal graphics, I'd suggest zooming out into tactical view, or setting the tactical view zoom level slider in the options so that it's always on regardless of zoom level. When you do this, all of the items on the map except for stars are represented by icons.

If you simply don't like the interface, I'm not sure what I could really say to help there--it is what it is.

What you seem to be asking is, Why did you make this game so well?, Why did you bother designing pleasing Graphics and animations? Why implement a varied and easily used gui?
Why did you bother doing all this when a bunch of text files would have suited me?

Thanks. I'll try the game in tactical mode and see how that works.

And for the other jerk-o, I'm not high, just looking for fun instead of frustration. The web site is too graphically busy for my taste, too.
