Poll: victories

I was just wonder at what point everyone choses their means of victory. That is, do you wait and see how the game unfolds after a few years and take the best route, or do you choose before the game starts?

I'm playing my first game still and everything is going well. I have the weakest military of the 3 remaining races but i have the tech and the economy (20,000 BC gaining like 400bc/week) to change that quickly. I also have good/neutral relations with my neigbors and control like 40% of the galaxy. SOOOoooo i still havent decided the route i want to take.

i decide when i'm setting up the game, because i usually disable at least influence victories (also tech victories and surrenders a lot of the time).

I always disable tech and alliance victories, it's just much too easy to win by those means without really being the dominant power in the game. I leave influence on, since I figure once I have 75% of the map I've pretty much won anyway. More often than not I end up winning an influence victory, but the real question is whether I do it by panet flipping and influence amplification (really an economic victory to my thinking) or by militarily seizing 3/4 of the map, which is really just a military win without the messy cleanup.

Either alliance or Military are my normal forms of victory.

I don't really plan for a victory anymore. I kinda size it up as the game goes on. In some cases I have to scrap a long term plan as new events occur. Someitmes thigns go very well or bad for me.

I did find planning for a type of victory was pretty helpful when I first started (I still do it occasionally). By limiting myself, I explored a variety of play styles and I think it helps me when I play normally as I am more flexible in my strategy.

It can also depend if you are playing for a higher score. If you think you are going to become a metaverse junkie, then military victories are the only way to go (you don't even get a medal for winning with every different victory type) because they consistently give the highest score.

If score is not a factor, I tend to leave all of them on and go for the one which will end the game the quickest. Once I have gotten to a point where I know I can win, it's just a matter of taking the time to grind it out, so I like to be done quickly and move on to the next challenge (i.e. game).

Dunno, I´m an early gamer, which means I´ve been trying every kind of victory.

The ones left are the conquering and technologic.

It really depends. I usually have an idea of how I want to play that I use to guide me through my race/abilities setup, which usually steers me towards a specific victory type, but I usually don't have any real decisions made at first. It really depends on how things pan out.

I've done every type but Tech, not patient enough

I disable Diplo and Tech, like Vinraith said, to easy, to boring.

I figure out which one I want as the game goes on. When i'm bored of merely manageing my empire I formulate a strategy as to how will grab more territory. Will I research influence and diplo techs, flipping planets, rolling up the galaxy and tucking into my pocket? Will I conquer a civ or three, then quietly assume my place as the dominant power? Or will I go all out and purge the galaxy?

Basically it depends on how bored I am with the galaxy. In my last game I had finished off the Iconians and decided that defeating their allies (the Torians... again) would be far too tedious. It wasn't that hard to convince the Torians into a peace treaty

I always start out intending to win an Influence Victory, which is my favourite type. However, I will abandon, or not even start, that victory path if it seems that it would be a very difficult one. I don't really like military action in this game. There are too many variables for me, so I usually don't try that path. Tech Victory is usually a sign that I could not figure out, or achieve, a higher scoring victory in a particular game. I used to go for Politcal Victories a lot, but they seem impossible for me in DL 1.31 and 1.4X, and I haven't had the opportunity to get Dark Avatar yet. I hear Political Victories a lot easier in that, so I will probably go for them a lot more often.

I just started playing GalCivII and just won my first DL game by conquest. What victory you choose probably depends on the situation but conquest seems the quickest.

edit: My second victory was playing as Humans using Influence. It seemed easy enough but it was only normal difficulty. The evil races got boxed in early on and wiped out about mid-way into the game by me. After that it was just a matter of using influence starbases, researching influence techs and building lots of contructors to add more influence.
