GalCiv ll Platform

Does GalCiv 2 run on Linux (I cant find platform specs anywhere on the website) and if not are there any plans to port it to Linux?

Sadly no to both (I'm a bit disappointed on that front as well), though I'm told it emulates fairly well under whatever WINE turned into (I can't recall the modern name).

The biggest problem is that SDC won't run under Linux, so you're going to need a Windows system to grab updates even if you're actually playing the game on a Linux machine with Windows emulation.

If you've got a way of working around the OS issue it really is worth your while, though. It's by far, IMO, the best 4x game on the market right now.

Unfortunately, I think the last (current) hope for Linux gaming died when Loki went bankrupt. They pushed hard, but in the end the public just wasn't there to buy enough native Linux games to keep them going.

There's always the chance another publisher/developer will come along and give it a go, but it may be a while before we see anyone devote as much time, effort, and money as Loki did.

the current WINEX emulator that is best for games is Cedega... my only experience with it was that I got the GCII demo to install, but not play, probably due to the fact that I had an onboard video card, and linux didn't detect the OpenGL support the board claimed to have, So i couldn't get the game to work, if you have a decent video card you might try the demo and see if it will work... and if you don't want to pay for Cedega, I will be happy to send you a copy (their license allows me to distribute it without cost/modification, so its legal)

Really sucks. I diddnt know about Loki until after they went bankrupt. I played GalCiv 1 and LOVED it! I was really hoping to get into GalCiv 2 but ive been doing alot of work with Linux lately and ive made a decision not to purchase any more games that will not run on Linux. Im trying to be completly Microsoft independant, and World of Warcraft is my last obsticle (I already had it and im GM of a fairly large guild.....but once im finished with Wow, then ill have nothing holding me to windows.

P.S. Cedega (wineX) doesnt work as well as they advertise....it takes alot of know-how and googling to tweak a program to run well, and then its not like native. I have it also.

I think Stardock would do an outstanding jobe of it...and it would be extreamly addicting IMO, as well as platform independant. :

I never liked the idea of Wine, WineX, Transgaming, whatever. It means you still have to buy a Windows game, so it's not really helping the Linux cause at all. But I did manage to get native versions of Quake 3, Descent 3, Tribes 2, and Heavy Gear II. And the UT games came with Linux versions right on the discs with the Wndows version, which is way cool.

I did mess with WINE enough to get the old version of Counter-Strike (1.5 - pre Steam) working, and could play it on the 'net or LAN. It was pretty cool.

Anyway, I'm too much of a gamer, so I've sadly given up trying to stay Linux exclusive. I love the whole idea of it, and use a Linux box as a router (rather than a Linksys type device).

I did my bit to help Loki stay alive, but these days I am bummed because I haven't been able to get my old Loki Railroad Tycoon II or Alpha Centauri to run under Fedora Core 6.

On the other hand, I did finally get the XP patch for SMAC to work, so I can at least play my Windows versions of Alpha Centauri (and, thanks to Game Jackal, I don't have to worry as much about the condition of my SMAC disk, which has a worrying amount of surface marring in evidence).

When I'm booted into FC6, I spend my gaming time on Battle for Wesnoth, mostly, if only because I haven't gotten FreeCol to install and run properly yet either (I think it's an incompatability with FC6's default non-Sun Java).
