Picking A Couple Of Nits

Having several hours invested in my first real game, I have come across a couple of areas that are, shall we say, less than stellar.

First of all, research/trade A.I. seems to be extremely lacking. Having explored the entire map, and not finding a single Aquatic or Heavy Gravity planet, it amazes me that the A.I. not only chose to research those techs, but consider them a valuable commodity for trading. Once I got them from the one minor race in the game via trade, I've been able to parlay them for anything I want, even though they are completely useless.

The other area that is disappointing is the lack of relationship between espionage and diplomacy. No matter how many of my spies get cought by the other races, their love for me does not deminish even the tiniest bit.

Could this all be because I am playing on normal?

Some races begin with certain colonization techs, so even if there are no planets of that type, they can spread without ever having been researched. The value that the AIs place on all techs is fixed in the TechTree.xml file--the intent is that the AIs won't easily part with them because of their high value, but it likewise makes them pay dearly to get them from others.

No matter how many of my spies get cought by the other races, their love for me does not deminish even the tiniest bit.

Spies can't be traced back to their masters, so unless it's just you and one AI, there's no way to know who planted them. And if it's just one on one there's a good chance you're already at war anyway.
