colonisation random events

Hi
I was just wondering what the starship bonus does?
The one where you get to decide if you want to deal with pirates or steal the orbiting ship when you colonise a planet?

I got a 45% starship bonus in this planet, so i made it my manufacuring capital and filled it with factories. Funny thing is, all the ships i build there, arn't showing any bonus compared to ships built in my other planets??

As far as I know, that bonus increases ship production.

The starship bonus gives a boost to both attack and defense for ships built on that planet (like a military bonus, but local only to that planet).

Damb, thats a shame. I was hoping to be able to build ships that can withstand high end weapons.

As things are now, i have to use up just about all my ship space on one specialised defence in order to have a dreadnaught that can withstand a 90% dead, lone frigate!

I am not seing this in the ship's details. They appear to be identical in every way to ships built in other planets?

Are you building ships powerful enough that the bonus isn't lost to rounding? AFAIK it's working fine, as I use such planets as my own primary shipyards when I get that event (and when you build ships with the psi weapons, you DO notice the bonus).

FYI, the bonus should be listed on the planet's details page (make sure you didn't colonize multiple planets that turn and get them confused!).

The first ships i built in that planet were defenders. With the 45% starship bonus they had 14 hitpoints, and 1 beam point. Defenders built in other planets have 14 hitpoints and 1 beam point. The same trend continues for everything upwards of that.

The 45% starship bonus is listed in the planets details.

Whats a 'psi' weapon?

It's a very, very sad little gun... tired of all the turmoil and conflict in it's life, thus prompting it to let out a sigh.

That's why you don't see a difference. Since any fractional amount of attack or defense is simply dropped, you won't see a benefit until you build ships with at least 3 in one attack category, in which case it would be increased to 4.

Psi weapons are available to evil civs. They're very expensive but have very powerful attack for their location in the tech tree.

Ah ic, so then the 45% bonus is devided between attack and defence so that i really get a 22% increase in attack? How do i determine a ships defence level?

I have never been attacked with psi weapons.... ahem, unless i'm playing Alpha Centauri of course! hehehe. Anyway, are psi weapons in the dreadlords expansion?

Psi weapons should(as far as I can recall) be under beam weapons. They're really like lasers you control with your mind. They might have their own research branch though, but I do believe that they're under beams.

No, it's 45% to all weapons and defenses (not HP!). You had 1 point of attack, with the bonus that makes 1.45. Fractional amounts are dropped, so you're then right back to 1. Same with 2. Once you get a ship with 3 attack and/or defense, the bonus will be more than 1 so you'll actually be able to notice it.

There's one of each type. They only appear on the tech tree after you research Xeno Ethics and choose evil. A ship with two psi beams on it has a base attack of 24, fairly early in the game. With the shipyard bonus, such a ship would be boosted to 34 beam attack.

All three have one Psionic Weapon. Psionic Missile (6 attack) comes after Harpoon III, Psionic Shredder (10 attack) comes after Graviton Driver III and my personal favorite, Psionic Beam (12 attack) comes after Phasors. You can often win the galaxy with only Psionic Beams, it's very powerful.

Once again, I was wrong. I've only ever used the beam.

The beam *is* the best one.    I find the Psionic Beam to be useful for quite some time. Once it's usefulness is ended it's because everyone else has Black Hole Eruptor's or Doom Rays plus Ultimate Invulnerability.

What shipyard bonus is that? Do you have to be evil to get that shipyard?
I havn't tried evil yet so i don't know. I'm playing dreadlords expansion and i have not seen any shipyard that gives ships a bonus except for the one that doubles hitpoints for ships only in orbit of that planet (needless to say, i didn't bother building that one).

I can understand keeping the Starship bonus to that planet, but thats a little tedious, especially if you have made another planet your primary starship factory. I would think the bounus would be avlible to your civilizations. but thats just and opinion.
Also, this seems like a trade item too me, its a bonus you get when you make deals with pirates. so shouldnt you be able to share that with other friendly civs?

Is it me or the starship bonus only affect Attack, and not Defense? I've got planets with a bonus higher than 40% where I built ships with more than 3 defense and I've never seen any difference. I'm even feeling slightly guilty to build ships with defense on those planets (and benefit less from the bonus).

i don't know why you would make another planet your starship factory aside from the one with the bonus? It's not like you can develop any planets before colonisation phase is complete, so i don't understand your point at all?

Damb lucky it's not a trade item! otherwise the AI would be in a far better position to capitalise on this... that is if they get random events when they colonise plkanets, i don't know?

It'd be pretty unbalancing if it were granted to all ships, not just those built locally--it'd basically be a fully developed military resource that was impossible to lose. And no other colonization events have any effect outside the planet they occur on either.

Agree.

So if i have a high level of espionage, i can see what colonisation bonuses the AI accepted for each planet (if it got a random event)?

Is there any other way of finding out? since i usually don't use espionage in order to get the random event wars.
