Question about initiative and multi-targeting

Don't flame, I am a newbie so be patient and please be helpful with answers.
First of all thanks to the programmers, nicely done except for my two cents worth(I know it has been covered extensively) but I would also like HOT-SEAT multi-player.
It was mentioned in some other posts how 10-15 fighters can take out a highly armed Dreadnaught. My question is does the Dreadnaught or any larger platform warship fire simutaneously at multiple targets. If I can load 6 photon torpedo banks and 2 phasers shouldn't they fire at different targets to reduce the firepower of multiple targets?
Also, since the Dreadnaught is a larger platform it should be able to equip itself with more sophisticated weapons were initiative is greater, in other words the should get the first shot and more of them.
I am very new and the battles I have engaged with my Dreadnaught targets one then another but not all at once, maybe I just haven't engaged in enough battles.
Also is there a place where I can see the specs on all weapons, for instance the type V11 phaser, I can see the attack power, what about distance and if there is initative. Same with missile weapons and mass drivers.
Any nice responses would be appreciated, thanks for your time and consideration.

No, any one ship can only target one other ship per round.

There is no weapon range or initiative, as battles in GC2 are a simple roll of attack vs defense, with a pretty scene to show how it plays out. There is no actual tactical battle control.

There's a stickied thread about the Galactopedia. Download that and it'll tell you all the stats of every tech and component in the game, IIRC.

Fleet battles are very difficult to predict.
The whole attack vs def and fleet target ship order are very complex.
And also is the paper/rock/scissor thing for weapons/defense, also has a similar affect with hull sizes as well ...
This is a very complicated game combat-wise in many ways.
I have Excel speedsheets to analyze the battle factors and I still can get my butt kicked !!!!
My advice is to take your time, and see what works for you ...
And as for HOTSEAT, yes that could be an great feature with this game.

When I first saw this thread's title, the first thing I thought was DND. Any way, there isn't any distance as far as weapons are concerned. To increase a ship's range and speed use life support and engines respectively.

The formula you posted is complex to me when I am forming fleets and I want to know which ship gets hit first. Too many times I have made a fleet and looked at the order listed and not been happy which ship gets blasted first !!!!!
That is why you are a Tough level Officer and I (and other players) are trying to improve our game skills.

Ignore the fleets. That doesn't matter. Look at each individual ship.

Ship attack / Ship defence + hp = priority

Highest priority is attacked.
Which means the biggest threat is killed first, which means that the AI automatically fights to reduce incoming damage ASAP. Which is why it's a good idea to protect battleships with little 5/0 fighters that get targetted first.

try to keep fleets as balanced as possable, for example 1 Huge, 2 Large,3 Medium and many small and tiny as it permits. This gartentees that you will go pretty well because it the same sets that the comp. uses.

I build my fleets the exact opposite. I design the ships so that the big heavy well defended ship gets targeted, so that my tiny-but-deadly small ships survive to do damage.

However my games rarely last long enough for me to face off against enemies with really high damage -- I've never fought a 100+ damage ship. I suppose that would change my tactics immensely.

Comp doesn't do everything best. I find if you can build a fleet of 5 huge ships that will simply annhilate everything they run across, do it. Don't try and set out a format that doesn't always work.

When your battleships dish out 170 odd damage from expensive weapons, you want them to outlive your 30 damage swarm of fighters
