Is there a point to Democracy?

Seems to just be a source of more problems...

On the Diplomacy tree you can research various forms of democracy.

What I need to know is this: Is this just an ornamental Role Play type of thing or does it have a real impact on the game? And if so, what is that impact?

I researched it and it became a HUGE pain in the ass to declare war on anyone...especially after those obnoxious Federalists booted my Technologist party out of power. (The nerve!)

So is there a real point to becoming a democracy in this game?

Bonus question - Assuming I choose to be a democracy again in the future, how do I strengthen my own party (technologists)? build lots of research centers?

There's an economic bonus of 10%/20%/30% for Republic/Democracy/Federation plus each level gives a 10% Diplomacy and 5% Influence bonus. Not very big bonuses but ones you should try to get sooner or later.

You need to have your approval in order (and expect to keep it in order for the rest of the game) before you research these techs otherwise you get what you mentioned. Also if your party does get booted out of power, their bonuses get subtracted from your abilities.

The only thing that affects your party's strength is your approval rating. I'd suggest keeping it to an overall 75% at the minimum.
