Video cards,

What are u using and do you have problems playing?

After too many ctd's to count i tracked my problem down to my video card. It's either a crap type (no i dont know that much about them) or i have a faulty card on my hands.

What video card is every one using and what problems if any is every one having and any reccomendations to which card i should buy next?

Im using an Nvidia card FX 5700le, wish i wasnt tho

You don't need to bump it, just be patient. They show up pretty quickly now.

I am using the Evga Nvidia Geforce 6800 GS SE CO with 256MB. It is one of the best mid-range cards, and works pretty well in the game. In the tests I have done it actually picked up a couple fps with AA set to 4x over having it turned off (got me on why with that). The card ran around $170 a few months back at ClubIT.com.

I have A Fx5500 and the game gives me no ctd's just gets a little slow down late game, and your card is better than mine , so it should run ok unless it has gone south(watch for overheating) or bad drivers. I also had a issue with Nvidia's 91.31 drivers and this game, so you might wanna check those too. I 've had no problems though with either the march driver or the newest one yet.

im running the march driver myself and wondered if that was the source of the problem...theres a new driver out....good

ill check it out and as for the overheating, i put an 8" fan in and that helped but on the hot days it can really be a pain.....

As long as it supports DirectX9, all that really matters is quality construction, good cooling, and stable drivers as far as GC2 goes. Of course more memory is helpful, but that won't cause or solve crashes on its own.

Personally I have an aging Radeon 9600XT in my desktop, and it performs just fine with no stability issues at all.

right when the game came out i was using a Nvidia GeForce3 Ti200 w/ 64mb of ram on it. SUPER SHITE!!! i had to play on a gfx level on par with a commodore64. and it was still mighty slow(pc was shite too, 256mb of RAMBUS, EWW!)

i play with a Radeon 9200 now, 256mb on the card and i play with the gfx to the max and i have no issues at all now.

6800 maybe be a good card for the price, but a 6800GS is not as good as a 6800, and a 6800GT would be even better. Heck, I say get that new AGP version of the 7600GS. It'll cost around $120-160 if you get it from NewEgg.com. Make sure it's AGP slot, NOT PCI-E slot, and make sure you HAVE a AGP slot to begin with!

If you have a AGP slot, do yourself some good and don't get a (nVidia)5200, (nVidia)6200, (ATi)9250, (ATi)9000, (ATi)X300, or (ATi)X1300 of any type because they are budget cards and won't do you very much for you. I still say, get a 7600GS or 6800GT, but if you really want go ATi, get a X1600 or a X800XT, just always make sure that it is a AGP version if you have a AGP slot, or a PCI-Express version if you have PCI-Express slot(s). And always check NewEgg.com and compare their prices with everyone else before you buy from someone.

Actually, the 6800 GS is as fast or faster than any but the 6800 Ultra. Its performance pretty much matches the 6800 GT, even with fewer pipelines, because of a faster core clock (425 vs 350 MHz) and smaller die size (110 vs 130 nm).

My particular card is a factory overclocked version with a copper heatsink. So it beats even the 6800 GT, but costs less and is less prone to overheating.

The AGP version is not as fast as the PCIe version, using a 350MHz core clock speed vs the 425MHz of the PCIe.

Check your system's power supply before taking the plunge. I have an older system, built in 2002, P4 2 ghz, using a nVidia geForce4 MX 440 8X that I salvaged from a slightly newer system. GC2 runs ok, but I've gotten the bug to upgrade the card and have learned that the newer cards have a heavy power requirement, 300W minimum and sometimes greater. I might be stuck until I go for a whole new system (or add a new power supply to the shopping list).

The higher end PCIe cards generally require 350W or greater. You can check the requirements at ATI's or Nvidia's site, or the site of the card manufacturer. SLI/Crossfire configuration requirements shoot up to 450-500W.

I'm running a 7900 GT with a factory super-clock (600 MHz). I'm using a 400W power supply with no problem. Though it *is* high quality. I also don't have a lot of periperherals on my system. Some people get a little obsessive about using an over-rated power supply. I suppose it's better not to push it if you don't have to, but if you need to, I think sticking with the video card maker's recommendation is fine.

On the other hand, the larger the power supply the less stressed it will be. Running a PS too near its max output generates a lot more heat, and reduces its life expentancy. Better too much than too little.

Im running a 400w power supply atm, so that shouldnt be a hassle. I want to go dual core, so i want to get a lower priced card till i can afford the full upgrade. Its prolly as much a driver issue as with the card, are all geforce drivers compatible with all gforce cards? anyone know?

Are there any video card issues with 1.3 that anyone knows about?

The docs for the drivers list the compatible chips. You could check on Nvidia's site.

Do you have the latest Nvidia drivers? (version 91.47)

Did you uninstall the old drivers before installing the new? You could experience problems if you didn't. If not, uninstall the drivers from Add/Remove Programs, reboot, cancel the Found New Hardware window when it comes up, and then reinstall the new drivers.
