(off topic) I'm bemused. In Swedish race is a term for a population within a species with differing phenotype, which can still produce fertile offspring with all other races of the species (think dogs doing it). A species on the other hand is defined by being able to procreate with each other (again, with fertile offspring) but not with other animals who then, by definition, belong to other species (think cats and dogs trying to do it).
Is the meaning in English any different? It shure appears that way when one reads sci-fi and fantasy, where (by the swedish definition) drengin, thalan and human (or dwarve, elf and illithid), being of different races within the same species, could procreate happily with one another.

That definition is being kicked senseless by various hybrids. Technically, horses and zebras belong to the same genotype, but not species. They can breed. Ditto horses and donkeys, and about every species of big cat. Often they die young, or are infertile, but species CAN cross-breed.

Given the incredibly huge number of planets in the Universe it is probable that there exists other intelligent life. However, such life is likely very rare and hence incredibly far away explaining why we have not met.

It is possible that all civilizations destroy themselves before they ever develop interstellar travel. The proliferation of nuclear weapons means that someone will eventually use it, triggering a worldwide apocalyse. Our human race might not survive the century. Perhaps all intelligent races suffer the same fate. That would explain why we haven't heard from anyone.

Wrong. We probably could do it quite easily with cranes and such, systems that the Egyptians had. Cranes, pulleys, slides, slaves. Add them together and you can make a pyramid fairly easily. Reason we can't do it now is because it's too damn expensive. Also:

Wrong. It had a beginning, (the big bang)

Actually, no, the Big bang simply explains how the Universe is now. All the big bang states is that a large amount of matter/all matter was in a tiny point, which then exploded outwards, it does not explain at all how the matter came into being. The big bang did not create matter, it just spread it about.

Yes, they can cross breed, but mules are not part of a species because they can't procreate. Hybrids are (as mentioned above) mostly infertile or too weak to survive before they get to bump uglies with anything. The definition endures.
