I have an old Asus notbook with 512MB of memory and a 32MB ATI graphics card and it works fine. Can't run on the highest settings but that is fine by me. Don't need all the bells and whistles to enjoy this game!

Carielf pointed me to some newer ATI drivers as the ones I had were to old. But after that, everything has worked smoothly.

Well, could you post your debug.err file? With some luck, there may be something in it that would explain your problem.

As a point of interest, I have a working Dell 610 with 32MB of video ram. I disable quite a bit of the video extras and run the game pretty clean. Once in a great while I will get some jerkiness but it cleans itself up (pretty sure its page swapping in the HD) usually when I am ship designing. I remember that "Frogboy" stated he was running GC2 on a very similar laptop, as mine. Not sure of exact specs.

I use Omegas drivers vice ATI though so that may help but I doubt it.

I'm running GalCiv II on laptop, settings on full. Have you tried updating to the latest patch(s) and see if that solves your problems?

My Specs are:
- A64 3000+
- 1GB RAM
- 128MB Radeon 9700 Pro

I have a toshiba laptop with a celeron m350 processor , 256mb ddr2 and a radeon express x200m on board memory . It works just fine only slowing down due to lack of memory but 1gb of ddr2 5300 memory on the way . It must be your drivers because this game is designed brilliantly to work on anything . Hell my laptop works better with gal civ 2 than my better desktop .

The 1.11 patch helped out my laptop tremendously. Notably 1.1. was much worse than 1.0 on my laptop and basically unusable, so be sure to go to 1.11. Also, you will definitely need a decent sized swap file even for a normal medium map or a sparse large map (I have 512MB on mine as well). I am able to run with all the default settings.

Even so, playing on the laptop is pretty harsh compared to my desktop with a 1GB RAM.

My game often crashes with the screen turning slowly white. Have no problem with other games e.g. WoW running with full details...

I'm running on a HP pavilion dv1000 notebook at full settings and don't seem to have any issues (except with the videos occasionally - dont crash but the image freezes). I'm running a Celeron-M 1.4 (~2.0 Gig equivalent) with 768 Mb ram and integrated video. One bit of advice I saw somewhere is boost your virtul memory setting up to at least a gig, I did that and got a bit of a performance improvement.

Also, 512mb of RAM I've found to be not enough on some machines I've looked at. I worked on a 400mb machine that was having increasing problems, and sometimes quite serious ones the find folks at Dell blamed on the motherboard. Doubling the memory, however, and cleaning up how everything was running made it all better. Not a problem since.

Dell packs in a lot of stuff on their computers so I would suggest going in and cleaning up background programs, get rid of any of the crap Dell puts on it, and run diagnostics to make sure your system isn't burning memory in a hundred different places. Windows, it seems, is itself increasing how much memory it uses with each update, so at 512mb anything extraneous will push you over the edge.

I'm running it on a Dell Precision M70, 1024MB RAM, 2.0GHz Pentium M Processor and I don't have problems. Well, except for the overheating problems. Some Dell designs are made with bad temperature sensor processing, will overheat ,and take down the computer. There is a fan program you can get to correct that.

I have been running it on a factory standard Toshiba Qosmio F10 without huge difficulties. I go get occasional crashes, less now than in the original retail collectors version since the updates and as the video drivers for this laptop are rather old I think that may be playing a large part. The sound DOES get very choppy (mainly the music) during the game but I have just turned off the music. I think this is down to the speed of the hard disk access as the game is using so much RAM that it is constantly paging on and off the disk.

When I run it on the main PC (an ASUS Pundit with 1GB RAM and a 3GHz P4) it runs fine with everything on high. Obviously the built in graphics on the ASUS being a bit better helps as well as the other stuff though.

runs fine on my Toshiba with 1.5Ghz Celeron processor , I upgraded to 1GB of RAM and have the latest drivers. Admittedly before the patches it was hit and miss....black screen of death...but all is happy happy now.
