I always though usefull, when I begin to specialize my colonies (and play with a LOT of planet) to always mark every colony names with a letter before the Colony's name.
M = Money Colony
R = Research
F = Factory
I = Influence
Helps a lot when you wonder "what did I wanted to do with this planet?"
