Finding Freighters

I have a problem finding freighters that, for whatever reason, have their trade routes disabled.

Is there something I am missing? I look in the ship list, but there is no way to tell which freighters are on active routes and which aren't.

Any help would be appreciated.

As I understand it, the actual freighter disappears as soon as a trade route is constructed - you get some little placeholder freighters zipping back and forth on the trade route from then on that can be targeted for destruction!

If you have a freighter available then it has not been used to create a trade route.
