Starforce = 666, Stardock = Great Company

Just saw your news blurb about starforce and wanted to chip in my two cents, as this is a subject I feel very strongly about. I have been a pc-gamer off and on for 15 years and this is where I draw the line.

RANT MODE ENGAGED:

Thank you for not using Starfarce. I usually wait for reviews before buying a game, but I pre-ordered GC2 to support your customer-friendly behavior. I will NOT tolerate starforce on my PC. I have not spent a fortune buying parts for my gaming machine, and hours and hours getting it exactly the way I want it to have some piece of shit malware screw it up. I've spent most of today re-imaging my game machine because of a starforce screwup.

I don't mind putting a cd in the drive (although I'd rather not!) and I can stand nonsense like securom or safedisc that doesn't screw up too bad. But any gaming company that uses starfarce has a classic cranial-rectal inversion and I WILL NOT BUY THEIR PRODUCTS. EVER. THE LINE HAS BEEN DRAWN.

Also, I'm telling everyone I know how great GC2 is. I have two friends who've bought a copy now, and one more looking for a copy to buy!

You know, I don't think it will happen, because people are fickle, but it certainly would be gaming-world shaking history if Stardock's great game became one of the season's best seller and that, thanks to their GREAT fan base support, awarded to them because they take time to listen and talk with them, that they would get enough leverage to make the game industry spin around on their pre-conceived ideas about copy protection?

The stardock revolution?

Not gona happen, but it's great to see how people are supporting this. Maybe GalCiv3 will be the revolution?

P.S. if GalCiv2 does start a revolution, I'll be very surprised but also very happy

Exactly, I am glad to see one of the indie games companies doing well. Big game developers seem to focus on the sizzle and neglect the steak, so to speak. Or rather they focus on flashy marketing, snazzy graphics (which GalCiv2 has by the way), and just seem to make clones of what has sold well in the past. Also, rarely if ever do you see more than two patches, and these patches only seem to fix major bugs while leaving glitches and poor design features in tact.

Stardock, on the other hand, regularly updates their games by squashing bugs, fixing glitches, and adds features based on user feedback and in house innovation. Stardock commandos, rock rock on!

Starforce isn't *that* bad, it only screws up some machines. ALthough, that "some" is more than most and the "screw up" is usually devastating. But I can say that I do have starforce on my machine, but only because there are a couple of games that use it that I like enough to warrant having starforce. I've had it installed since before anyone knew there was anything wrong with it, and I have had no problems because of it.

But others have apparently, and I can't argue with that. And I suspect these problems are related to the fact that starforce use a horrible method of implementing the copy protection (low level drivers from what I know, which you wil always run into problems with when you use them when you shouldn't be) that it has compatibility problems with many setups. Which is of course a bad thing.

i can tolerate drm but for an actualy copy protection firm to post links of where to download one of my favorite games for free is not on. i hope some of the bigger news sites like slashdot pick up on this.

sadly I do not have money to spend, I SOOOO wish i did, I will admit I have , aquired games, BUT only to A see how well the copy protection is, which stilll all really suck and are easy to get around and B to see if it is worth the money and then I do buy it.

Now however with Gal CIv4, I did not do either

and why is that, well first I got quick respect for the company, it being small and great customer service, two, I loved hacker elite it was a great game and easy to mod, three there was no copy protection so meh nothing to see if i could get around for kicks and finaly the community here is great.

and I must say, I do hate starforce ever so much but it can still be defeated

I know many people hate starforce but if you didn't before, you have to now! How could a company that is supposed to be anti-piracy, post links for people to download pirated software? (presumably because stardock decided to use starforce or anything like it)
