These ships are cool but unless I can use these great designs ingame they are useless to me. I see no file uploads of these, just pictures. I have no interest in creating them myself, just not interested- I left my erector set 30 years ago and virtual one (which is what the ship editor seems to me) doesn't interest me:)

There are people here really making art pieces from that ship designer. My two cents cannot stand most of your works, maybe, but at least i made them all downloadable.

Well then, showtime. Since there's that nice borg cube before me, i'll start with my two Star Trek inspired desings. They are not 100% like the originals, I just wanted to recreate the style, not the exact appearence of a particular ship.

The first one is a medium sized hull. Called her the Oberon (wasn't it the name of one of the smaller Fed cap ships in the series?)

Then the large sized hull, the Galaxy Class. Clean, slender, and it looks wonderful from the battle camera. Ah, Kryo, what a beatiful mod you've done

Now, some of mine smaller designs. In some of them i got crazy to put some semi-hided details here and there, too bad being small ships, in battle these details are rarely seen.

Then the small sized. First, the Rhyno, i use her as an heavy missile boat.

And the Dark Angel.

Finally, my biggest design, the Sovereign. It was meant to resemble a Carrier huge ship. It was not easy, but i somewhat managed to make an hangar inside the ship, going on its full lenght, from prow to poopdeck. There are also to smaller openings on the sides, enclosed by a grid-like component, to simulate smaller hangar doors.
You'll see that there are also 8 double turrets around the ship, each one with its two 8-point hardpoint multiplier. Initially I placed there small red light components. It looked quite nice, but they were 16x8=128 additional components, it made the ship loading for every battle too long. But you can place there ultra small weapon modules, to sorta see some fire coming from them. It works decently only with beam weapons, anyway, they are the only one in which you can usually clearly spot from where the shot starts. Unfortunately, sometimes, when a weapon is placed on the turret, and the ship is firing at a target just in front of her, it will seem that the shot is passing through the hull in its course. Couldn't do anything about that, at least withouth screwing up the proportions (you have to make those "turrets" components almost bigger than the ship itself to prevent that from happening).

in the mods section. Big thanks to Darth Griffin for being so fast in uploading them. I have the feeling it will take some time before we'll see any custom ship in the official library, i think they are going to wait to made them better shareable in future updates (well, i hope so, at least).

Note that to made 'em work you gotta have both CE content and Kryo's hull mod (I also have installed the Hardpoint Fix mod, but i think it doesn't change much of anything, anyway if you're experiencing problems, try downloading that one also). All ships are just basic hulls, so you should see them appear as soon as you have the required base tech (mostly Hull size techs). I said "mostly" because sometimes, at random in my games a couple designs get misteriously related to other techs (once it was an industrial tech, for example). Dunno why, they shouldn't really do that, probably some glitch in the game.

Finally, all ships were made as a Custom Race. They shall appear in game for any custom race you play, the race's saved name doesn't interfere with them, don't worry. Anyway, you should quite easily be able to attach 'em to any other race manually, with just a bit of file editing. Just make a blank ship for a certain race, giving her an unique name, then go to the ships folder, and copy and rename the S0_UD_Shipname.shipcfg accordingly.

Example, i want to translate the Galaxy to the Terran?
Start a game with the Terrans, get to being able to build large sized hulls.
Create a blank large sized hull, let's call it "Galaxy Battleship" then save it.
Exit, and go to My Documents/My Games/Galciv2/Ships
You'll see there 2 files called GalaxyBattleship.shipclass, and S0_UD_GalaxyBattleship0.shipcfg
Take my hull setup. In this case it will be S0_UD_GalaxyClassHull0.shipcfg
Just delete the original S0_UD_GalaxyBattleship0.shipcfg, and rename my setup file to take his place.
Restart game, you should see your new ship for the terrans ready to boldly go where no man has gone before.

I just started playing the Drengin for the first time.... I took one look at the cargo hull and thought... Mmmm Dragon!

Probably been asked before, but how do you take pictures of your ships? In game anyway. Is there a folder or snapshot option?

Many of these ships are VERY VERY cool...I can only hope I can design my own to be this good...*sigh*...to work!!
*Hasent even GOTTEN into combat yet, none the less past small hulls*

I can't believe how good these ships are! It makes me sad when I look at my own pitiful attempts. The only type of ship I am alright at creating is fighters.

has anyone created ships based on the freespace universe? I made some, but I can't find them anymore, they aren't showing up in the game.

These ships are simply amazing!!! I have been trying to make my own, but they are butt-ugly compaired to these!!!
I wish there was an external program that would allow building of ships outside of the game. It would be alot easier
to build the ships if it was windowed and next to a referrance picture.

I want to make some that look like the BattleTech Universe.

Custom ship configs are kept in My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\ships\S4_UD_YourShipName.shipcfg
start uploading these to the ship library!

You can always get gmax or blender if you know how to do 3d modeling.

speaking of which I think I'm gonna go try it myself... I always wanted to use this fighter design that I did long time ago in a game..

This was my first real attempt at making a ship look good. I thought it was pretty cool, personally, although it pales in comparison to some of these other beauties.

There is nothing wrong with simplicity as long as it has a strong iconic look. Best way to tell if you have something good going is to check the profiles of your ship. A strong, pleasing, and recognizable image from the profiles usually means you have a good design.

Yet another Battlestar style ship. This is the Argus class, fresh out the shipyard with nothing fitted. It's an enhanced version of my previous Ulysses class Battlestar. More armour-syle extras, larger side-pods and more engines. I seem to be spending longer designing ships than actually using them these days!
