New player needs a lot of help, please.

Hello to all!

I have had a bit of a problem lately getting into games. Recently i bought Civ IV, Fable, Call of Duty 2, and now GalCiv2. I haven't been able to get into any of them. I don't know if it is my new job or my new apartment or what.... Anyway, I never played the first GalCiv and the only other turn based game I played was Garry Grigsby's World At War. I don't want to put GalCiv2 down in a few days and not play it because I can't figure it out. I see the tutorials but I would rather have something I can print out and read along as I play to learn the game. Any Ideas or hints to get me up and running and understanding GC2 would be appreciated. Thank you!

since its fairly new there isnt alot of FAQs or user created manuals around, I'd suggest browsing the forums for a little each day. I'm new to the series as well but I also have Civ 3 and 4 so I'm fairly experienced with turn-based strategy games.

I bought the game online and downloaded it so I dont have a printed out manual to use while playing. Though I did take the time to skim it for important info. It is detailed and has a table of contents I'd try looking into that.

I had trouble finding certain screens and such but after some reading and some hands on experience I think I have it sorted out now.

BTW if you do find some good strategy write ups post em as what is on the forums is quickly getting better but isn't consolidated enough.

The manual helps. Look around for similar threads here (might have to sift thru a lot of pages) with the advice you're seeking (that's been provided repeatedly).

#1 thing you absolutely must do when starting a new game is: bring up the screen where you manage taxes, industrial capacity, and production sliders, and crank your industrial capacity up to 100%. This is critical or you'll get blown away in every game. You usually set your taxes higher too, within reason (don't totally crush your people's morale/approval rate)

I guess it's hard to help you without knowing what you already know. I would suggest starting a game, normal difficulty and play. That's what I did. I didn't know crap either. Make notes of things you don't understand as your playing, then come post specific questions, or better yet search the forums for those topics.

My advice, put the game down, and never look back. I ahve spent every free moment playing it, and every busy moment thinking about playing it....... It's an awsome game, but run while you don't know what your missing!

Either these forums or the game manual. You could keep an eye out on Gamespot.com for their soon-to-be-released Game Guide for the game (they usually release these sometime within the first two weeks of a game's release, usually)... Good luck, I've had some of the same problems myself these days with meatier games that have a lot of depth. Just hard to get into them sometimes, Rome:Total War for example, I love the idea but seems to be almost TOO much to learn sometimes...doh!

It takes time and commitment. And, there's always the possibility that you are just not a game person.

Read the manual, (several times), watch the tutorials, (several times) and read the forums often as time goes by there will be more and more on startegy. Number one, play the game. Like sports, reps will make the difference.

I have had the same trouble with other games when the game premise is not interesting to me. In the case of GC2, MoO2, Starcraft and SMAC, I am such a rabid scifi fan I was driven to understand and play the games. If you don't love the world you are playing in you probably will never really catch on to the game.

Yeah, the manual is installed along with the game as a pdf-file. The default path for the manual is "C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\GalCiv2manual.pdf"
I have actually enjoyed reading it a lot while playing - although ALT-tabbing back and forth is a bit of a pain

Well this isn't the first time someone's asked. I know I gave tips in several different threads. Have you tried the forum search function ?
