How do we get better warships?

I only played for a couple of hours, but no better warship than a Defender popped up in my build-list, even though I researched a lot of warfare techs. Is there a default 'ship-progression' as in GC1, or do we have to design them all ourselves? In the manual it says "You can design your own ships in the Ship Yard." ... can, not must ...

When you develop a new hull type, weapon, ect you get a "core" ship that uses that new tech. If you want to take the new tech (in this case hull size) and outfit it with your best stuff, you have to design the ship yourself.

In order to have the core ships appear, you must have researched all the necessary tech, which may not all be military (you may need defense, propulsuion, life support, etc...

It is definetelly easier to design a new ship with the techs you have, at least until there is a list of the missing techs for a given model of core ship.

So I guess we just need a good deal of different kinds of warfare tech before the better core-ships start to arrive ... more than I researched in an hour or two ...
