Hi, I began playing the game about 4 hours ago and althought I had very high hopes for this game my first impression score for tonight is about 5/10. This is not a rant and I don't plan on insulting anyone personnal prefence because I don't like the game as much as them but I write this post because I think some of these issues can (should) be adressed by the devs. In some (maybe even many) maybe I just missed the feature/control that could have solved my problem, but I can't really turn to the tutorial or the manual to help.
Here it goes:
- No diagonal edge of screen scrolling: Push your mouse in one corner and it will either not do anything or just scroll in one direction. Very confusing at first. I got around that by using the drag and drop with the first mouse button.
- Some popups are displayed outside of the screen. Don't know if this is at all related to my screen resolution of 1600x1200 but some popups, like the one shown when your pointer pass over the tinny little icons just above the minimap, display their text partially outisde of the screen.
- Speaking of screen resolution they are listed in the option menu in a totally weird order. Not from lowest to highest.
- Mouse wheel don't scroll (or always scroll) when inside a text box. You have to be straight above the scroll bar for it to work.
- Game is extremely alt-tab unfriendly. Well I can understand that. And one can always play in windowed mode instead.
- I got the mouse cursor problem others identified. And the game completly froze the whole computer. (On a one week old fresh install of Win XP, with all the latest drivers).
- Okay, the possibility to press end turn (or accidently hit Enter) from everywhere in the game, even when you have another menu open, is kinda weird. Skipped a few turn this way. Though this is a pretty minor problem.
- Extras in the shipyard could benefit from having a little description under their name like for example: wing!
- Stacking rotation point can get you in a hell of a mess. At least if you could delete more than one thing at a time (maybe I just missed this feature).
- Should be able to resize ship parts once their attached to the hull.
- Why do I have to unstack ships or disband fleets to upgrade them?
- When trying to create fleets at some time clicking on the create fleet button would only add an empty square next to my ship icons in the command bar and never actually created the fleet. I could add empty sqaure that way indifinetly
- There doesn't seem to be a way to completly reset a race settings once you modified it. There's a reset button for the attribute but not for the name, leader, color, etc...
- The devs said that the screenshots didn't do justice to the fights in the combat viewer. I totally disagree with this. It's quite the opposite. I prefer to turn it off or just skip the fight and go to the statistics. Combat viewer reminds me of space games on miniclip.com (yes that is an extremly personal opinion. Remember though that I said bugs and deceptions in the post title).
- Woman voice in the intro movie had the most turnoff voice I ever heard. (Ok yeah that is totally biased and maybe even stupid, but hey I found it funny). Sorry if it is someone's wife/sister/mother.
- Pissed me off that I cancelled my preorder from Amazon at 39.99$ CAD including shipping because they didn't stock the collector edition (which I wanted only for the bonus ship parts) and switched to a direct preorder from stardock at 44.95$ USD plus shipping (in USD also) to see this morning that anyone who get a "first generation" game will get all the electronic collector edition stuff. Well, maybe I'll appreciate the tech poster more once I get it.
Overall, I love that game's concept. It has all the depth that civ4 lacked and it uses a sci-fi setting. But my overall "first five hour" with the game impression is: It could have benefited from another month of beta. At some place it felt a little cheap.
Hope I did not offend anyone with my post. Tone isn't reliably transmitted in a forum post. But be assured I wrote this in a quiet, relaxed tone.
Till we meet again... I'll try my luck at a tiny 1 on 1 galaxy. Maybe my next 5 hours will deserve a 10/10
Good evening.
